Summary:

Holy Mackerel alumni and coach, Travis Carpenter, has been personally selected to attend the World Ultimate Championships in the U23 division with Team USA this summer in London, England!

After over 500 applications, he was hand selected to tryout among the top 100, male, college aged Ultimate players in the country for his chance at representing his home town, the state of Indiana, and his country on an international level. Of the 100 talented enough to tryout, a final 23 have been selected for the men's team. Now selected Travis will be put through a training program, attend a week long training camp with his new teammates, and then travel internationally to compete in a week long tournament - The World U23 Ultimate Championships - among dozens of national teams, in hopes of bringing home a gold medal and having the experience of a life time.

As incredible as this opportunity is, attending training camp and traveling to London, England comes with a price, and all costs fall on to the players. It is our hope, as his Alma Mater, that we can come together as a community and help this very deserving athlete have his chance to compete internationally and represent the United States. We are setting a goal of $2,000 to aid him in attending and we need your help!

The Player:

Travis Carpenter began playing Ultimate his sophomore year, in 2009, at Center Grove High School. Our club was much smaller at the time and coming off a second place finish to Martinsville in the high school state championship the year before. A former soccer player, Travis made an immediate impact on our team, both with athleticism and a dedication to practicing and training for Ultimate like athletes would in any other varsity sport. It was contagious and changed the way we thought about our team, our sport, and how to work hard.

Despite his impact, we fell short to Martinsville in the finals again in 2010. With his leadership continuing in 2011 we attended the Chicago Invite for the first time, exposing our club to higher level youth Ultimate from around the country. Adding player ran conditioning and extra practices on off days throughout the week Holy Mackerel took on a new form due to his influence. Finally, capping the end of his high school career, Holy Mackerel finally claimed the title of state champion and began a four year string of wins that to this day is still unbroken.

Immediately following graduation Travis branched off into two major steps for the growth of Indiana Ultimate. The first, was founding INdiana INfamous, our state's first competitive club team in years. The second, was trying out for and making the Indianapolis Alleycats in the inaugural season of semi-professional Ultimate. Quickly nicknamed Travis "The Kid" Carpenter, and then popularized by Sky'd Magezine he was on the rise. Travis lead the Cats' in D's in his second year, and became a starter.

In Travis' sophomore year of college he helped found Indiana Brickyard, the now most elite men's team in Indiana and became a core player for the Indianapolis AlleyCats. Beyond that, he founded Indiana Wesleyan's "Huck Dynasty" who is now a contender for making D3 College Nationals this coming season.

With newly received accolades including Ultiworld's D3 Defensive Player of the Year, runner up D3 Player of the Year, and runner up Breakout Player of the Year, as well as being selected as one of the AUDL's four Breakout Players of the Year (among names like Peter Graffy, Darren Wu, and Justin Allen) Travis has been nothing short of a work machine, pushing the boundaries of what players his age are capable of.

Beyond his skill and athleticism on the field, Travis makes a point to be an example of what Spirit of the Game means. He is a constant example of doing your best to play with integrity and to play in a way that impacts your teammates and opponents life in a positive way.

He also serves as a coach and an organizer right here in Center Grove High School. For three years he has been a part time coach for Holy Mackerel, helping to lead us to continued state championships. For the past two years he has been the league director for South Side Ultimate League, the second largest summer league in the state. And he also hosts a handful of college tournaments each year to give more opportunities for teams to play and for the sport to grow.

Team USA selections are based on the following major categories: Overall offensive and defensive ability, coach-ability, and sportsmanship. Although there are many very talented players at throughout the United States chasing this dream, we can't think of a single person who better exemplifies these qualities in the state of Indiana, and we're excited to help Travis have his chance to represent us.

The opportunity:

After over 500 applications, resumes, and letters of recommendations, then attending tryouts among the top 100 players, Travis has been selected as one of the top U23 players in the country and is being given the opportunity to compete at the World Ultimate Championships this summer in London, England with Team USA.

Before attending, Travis will be put through a rigorous training program to prepare. He also will have to travel out of state for a week long training camp with the rest of his new team as they build chemistry and solidify their offensive and defensive strategies.

This is only the second time any Indiana athlete has been selected for Team USA tryouts of any division let alone be selected for the team, and it is a testament to his hard work and good attitude, as well as the general growth of Ultimate in the Indianapolis area.

This is both a great honor and opportunity for this young, dedicated player.
